Dear David I have come into this discussion about AVG's Firewall and networks late but the following may be useful to the problem you are having. I am doing this walkthrough from memory but I am fairly sure it is accurate. When you first set up AVG Firewall there are 3 settings which appear. These are ; 1. Allow all 2. Block all, 3. stand Alone PC.
Surprisingly none of these profiles are appropriate for anybody running a network that they want to access from their PC. If you are in this position you need to run the AVG configuration wizard from scratch. Do not attempt to edit any existing profiles. Whilst running the configuration wizard you need to select quote computer and domain quote as the type of setup you require. Restart your PC and go back to check your AVG settings. You should now find that Computer and Domain has been added to the previous 3 options of Allow all, block all, an d stand alone. Make sure that computer and domain is checked and you should be good to go with Firewall protection but also ability to access your networks. Given the increasing amount of home networks, even if it is only linking a laptop to a desktop I think AVG should have made this option more intuitive and part of the standard options. ? Renaming it from computer and domain to network might also be useful.
