Mike, et al.: This is likely an Outlook Express setting rather than JAWS. From the outlook Express message list, Go into Tools Options with ctrl+shift+o; then shift+tab; then right-arrow to the Read Tab; and then press the tab key. You will come to the 'mark message read after displaying for' checkbox. if this checkbox is not checked, check it with spacebar. After that, on the next tab keypress you have an edit spinbox which gives the amount of seconds after which the message will be marked as read.
