Hi

I hope this helps

Enabling JAWS for SPSS for Windows

SPSS for Windows offers accessibility for all users, as well as specific
support for users with

visual and other functional impairments. This document describes how to
enable JAWS

R

screen-reading software to work with this product.

To enable JAWS you need to:

E

Download and modify a more recent script file than the one that ships with
JAWS.

E

Copy the dictionary file to the same folder as the script.

E

Enable the Java Access Bridge. This step is necessary only if you plan to
use the Tree Editor, the

Chart Editor, or Predictive Enterprise Services.

Downloading and Modifying the Script File

JAWS ships with a set of script files for SPSS for Windows. Although the
file creation date for

these files is relatively recent, the scripts that they contain were written
in 1999. JAWS will work

better with SPSS for Windows if you use the 2002 version of the script file,
which you can

download from the Freedom Scientific web site.

E

Go to the folder that contains the SPSS for Windows script files that
shipped with JAWS and

rename the files or move them to a different folder.

If you are using JAWS 6.x or 7.x, these files are located in C:\Documents
and Settings\All

Users\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\7.0\SETTINGS\enu.

If you are using JAWS 5.x, these files are located in the \SETTINGS\ENU
folder in the

JAWS installation folder.

E

Go to http://www.freedomscientifi
<http://www.freedomscientific.com/fs_support/BulletinView.cfm?QC=426>
c.com/fs_support/BulletinView.cfm?QC=426 and download the

zip file containing the 2002 SPSS for Windows scripts.

E

Extract the script files and put them in the folder that contained the old
script files.

If you are using JAWS 6.x or 7.x, put the files in C:\Documents and
Settings\All

Users\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\7.0\SETTINGS\enu.

If you are using JAWS 5.x, put the files in the \SETTINGS\ENU folder in the
JAWS

installation folder.

E

All the new script files are named SPSSWIN, but each has a different
extension. Rename every

file to SPSS for Windows. Do not change the extensions.

E

Now you need to modify SPSS for Windows.jss so that it includes the correct
file. If you are using

JAWS 6.x or 7.x, launch the JAWS Script Manager and open the file. If you
are using JAWS 5.x,

open the file in Notepad or a similar text editor.

E

Search for

include "spsswin.jsm"

to find the include statement that you need to change.

E

In the include statement, change

spsswin

to

SPSS for Windows

.

E

Save the file. (If you are using the Script Manager, note that saving the
file recompiles the script.)

E

Launch JAWS.

E

Launch SPSS for Windows. You should hear JAWS say that it's using a script
written in February

2002.

Copying the Dictionary File

We have created a new SPSS dictionary file for use with JAWS 7.10. It has
not been tested

with earlier versions of JAWS. Although you are not required to use the SPSS
dictionary file, it

contains the correct pronunciations of statistical terms that JAWS
mispronounces. In addition, it

removes "dashes" from a number of terms. For example, if you use the
dictionary, "chi-square" is

read as "chi square" rather than "chi dash square."

E

Go to the Accessibility folder on the CD-ROM and copy the SPSS for
Windows.jdf file.

E

Paste the file into the folder that contains the JAWS script files for SPSS
for Windows.

If you are using JAWS 6.x or 7.x, paste the file in C:\Documents and
Settings\All

Users\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\7.0\SETTINGS\enu.

If you are using JAWS 5.x, paste the file in the \SETTINGS\ENU folder in the
JAWS

installation folder.

E

Launch JAWS.

E

Launch SPSS for Windows.

E

Open a data file.

E

>From the menus choose:

Analyze

One-Sample T Test

If the dictionary file is being used, JAWS reads "One Sample T Test" instead
of "One dash

Sample T Test."

Enabling the Java Access Bridge

The Chart Editor, the Tree Editor, and Predictive Enterprise Services are
written in Java. If you

plan to use these portions of SPSS with JAWS, you need to enable the Java
Access Bridge. To

enable the Java Access Bridge, you need to:

Set the location of the Java Access Bridge.

Replace the default Java accessibility.properties file.

Setting the Location of the Java Access Bridge

E

>From the Start menu, open the

Control Panel

.

Enabling JAWS for SPSS for Windows

E

Double-click the

System

icon.

E

In the System Properties dialog box, click the

Advanced

tab.

E

Click

Environment Variables

.

E

In the Environment Variables dialog box, scroll through the System Variables
list and select

the

Path

variable.

E

Click

Edit

.

E

At the beginning of the Variable Value text box, type the path to the SPSS
for Windows

installation folder followed by

\JRE\bin;

. For example, if SPSS for Windows is installed in

C:\Program Files\SPSS, type:

C:\Program Files\SPSS\JRE\bin;

E

Click

OK

.

Replacing the Java accessibility.properties File

E

Go to the \JRE\lib folder in the SPSS for Windows installation folder. For
example, if SPSS for

Windows is installed in the folder C:\Program Files\SPSS, go to C:\Program
Files\SPSS\JRE\lib.

E

Rename the accessibility.properties file or move it to a different folder.

E

Go to the Accessibility folder on the CD-ROM and copy the
accessibility.properties file.

E

Paste the file into the \JRE\lib folder in the SPSS for Windows installation
folder.

The Java Access Bridge will load the next time you launch SPSS for Windows.
