Hello Gerald, There arre a couple points I forgot to mention in my last message. One is that Drive Image XML doesn't let you backup to a network shared location. It will create a backup for an external drive on the same computer but not over a network. using Image for Windows it is quite easy to back up over a network. The other point is that in order to restore the image, it appears that a person needs to create a Bart's PE CD to use for booting. The Drive Image XML plug-in needs to be added to the Bart's PE CD in order to do the restoration using the program. If you buy Image for Windows, a couple programs included with Image for Windows let you create both a DOS and a Linux boot CD. So, although I have created an image using Drive Image XML, I haven't completed building a boot CD for it. It is apparently a pretty straightforward process, but I have tried it on two machines running XP and haven't been successful yet. If you have a XP installation CD then building a Bart's PE disk from that CD should be easy enough to do. I have been trying to build the Bart's PE CD from installation files on the PC and not having much success. I'll try it when I get a Windows XP CD to use. If you choose to go with Drive Image XML then be sure that you understand how to be able to use a boot CD and use the program for restoring. The program is added to the Bart's PE CD as a plug-in. There are a couple sites with pretty good instructions on how to build the Bart's PE CD to use for restoring an image created by Drive Image XML. One of the sites is:
http://www.darkchip.com/DriveImageXML/Installing%20DriveImage%20XML.html There are links also at the bottom of that page for going through the entire process of backing up and preparing for restoring images using Drive Image XML. Also, the Bart PE disk is only for XP based computers. The developer claims that the program works in Vista as well, but I haven't read up on the restoring process for Vista-based systems. Extracting one or more files without performing a restoration can easily be done using the Drive Image XML program. Take care.
