The last scan I did Avast completed successfully.

Hi All,
I recently ran a full scan using Avast. When Avast got to 30% of the scan
completed it got stuck right there with out any bells & whistles going off
or anything. Can someone explain to me if this is a common occurrence or
what is Avast doing when this happens? I eventually had to manually shut
the computer down and reboot. I am running XP/SP3 Home & Jaws 10.0.1151.
