I have read that some of the Targus numpads do work with screen readers.
I have one that I got from Beyond Sight in Colorado, and it works well
with Window Eyes, and I would assume that it would work with JAWS.  The
only way to know for sure that it will work is to try it, and
familiarize yourself with the return policy of the vendor in case you
need to return it if it doesn't.

I am not certain about the brand you will be using, but I once used a
num 
pad on a laptop. For the most part it worked pretty well, however, some
of 
the Jaws commands such as say word and spell word, (insert 5,) didn't
work.
