That's indeed the same. The only difference is that the automatic option under power saver will get cleared-up as soon as one touches the key or the touch pad, whereas closing the lid will activate the internal display switch and thus the display will be off until the lid is opened again.

If that's true then on my HP laptop I simply set the turn off monitor under power management within the power scheme tabb in the control panel to turn off monitor after one minute.
