You can try going to add/remove if you are using XP and highlighting avast.
Then tab to change remove. You will be asked to make a selection i.e. update
program, remove, and repare. You want to arrow down and highlight repare and
tab to next and hit enter. Avast will let you know when it has finished
reparing avast. You should reboot your computer to let the changes take
effect. Good luck.
