Steve,

Go to your desktop and hit the tab key until you are on the start button.
Hit the application key and select properties. Use the ctrl/tab key to
select task bar page. There is a check box there that you need to make sure
is unchecked. The name is hide inactive icons.  Hope this helps

How do I get the items in the system tray  to show?
What I mean is I only have 2 items showing up and I did have several more
showing before, I haven't changed anything that I'm aware of, thanks Steve.
