Hi Martin,
If you have an audio cd that came with your version of Jaws you should go
through much of that material.
Basically though, the JawsCursor is what sighted PC users would call the
mouse pointer.
It can be sitting just about anywhere, even on the desktop while the person
is in a word processor or other program.
You will find it useful when moving the PcCursor doesn't yield enough
information or allow you access to controls you need.

Oh and if you didn't get a cd you can always find books under training in
the Jaws help system which detail very nicely all of these concepts.

Can someone explain to me or direct me to a web page that explains the JAWS
cursors: what they actually are and why you would switch to them. I'm very
confused by this.
