Hi Joanne,

On my computer I have a 250 gig harddrive & a 500 gig external drive. It
takes approximately 2 & ½ hours for a full/100% scan. If anyone wants to
keep apprised of your scan status, do the following.
1. After you have started your scan, route the jaws cursor to the PC cursor
using the keystroke JAWS / insert key + num pad minus / JAWS cursor key.
2. Now, press the key combo of control key + home key to route the cursor to
the top of the page.
3. You can now arrow down 1 line at a time to view the scanning processes
and percentages of the scan completed..
When I do a scan my system seems to hang up at a certain percentage / number
of files for a long period of time, but I just let it go because it does
eventually get through it and complete the scan.
Yes, Avast does update itself automatically. Hope this helps. Take care.
Mike

Thank you for this info, Mike. I have it running but am now wondering
about
updates. Since this is the free version, do I need to update it myself
once
a week or so, or does this update definitions regularly?

And is it normal for it to take a very long time to do a thorough scan? I
think this is what it's set on, and it barely moves percentage-wise and
has
so far taken about an hour. I have 2 hard drives in here so maybe that's
the norm but just wanted to know.

  Thanks again.

  Joanne
