Hello Desyree,

Before starting to set up the header and page numbering there are a few things to consider. For example, if the document is set up with sections then the process will be a little different than if only one section has been used. You will need to determine if the header should start on the first page of the document, the second page of the document or on a subsequent page. You will also need to consider the type and formatting of the header and page numbers that you will use. I will first give steps for using a header to be printed on the first page of the document and with the first page being numbered as 1. I will then show how to start the header on the second page of the document with page numbers starting with 2 to be printed with the first header on page 2. Next, I will show how to start the header on page 2 and start the page number in the first header as 1 even though it starts on page 2. Finally, I will show how to create the header on a different page than on page 1 or 2.

HEADING AND PAGE NUMBERING STARTING ON PAGE ONE

1. Move the cursor to the top of the document.
2. Press Alt followed by N followed by H for inserting a header.
3. Choose the "blank header" choice and press enter key.
4. Press CTRL+R to start the right alignment.
5. Type in the last name and then if you want the words "page number" on the next line press enter key and type those words. 6. Leave a space after typing the words "page number" and then press Alt key to go to the design tab. Press tab to move to the lower part of the ribbon.
7. Use tab key to the "page number" button and use spacebar.
8. Use up arrow key to move to "current position" and then use right arrow into the submenu for current position.
9. Press enter key on the choice for using plain numbers without formatting.
10. Use up arrow key to make sure the very top header has your name, the words "page number" and the page number field. It should show as being page 1. 11. Use down arrow key and check to make sure headers are showing consecutive page numbers.

HEADERS STARTING ON SECOND PAGE STARTING WITH PAGE TWO

1. Move the cursor to the top of page two.
10. Press Alt key to move to the design tab and then use tab key to move to the lower part of the ribbon. 11. Use shift key with right arrow until JAWS says "options group box." This is actually a checkbox that needs to be checked for using a different first page. To confirm that focus is on the checkbox use tab key to move away from the box and then shift+tab to move back to it and JAWS should let you know it is a checkbox for choosing a different first page. Use spacebar to check the box. 12. You can then tab to the close button and press enter key to close the header and footer window.

HEADERS STARTING ON PAGE TWO WITH PAGE NUMBERING STARTING AT 1

Follow steps 1 through 11 shown immediately above. These steps will be the same as starting on a second page with the header and page numbering, except the page numbering will start as page one.

After performing steps 1 through 11 as shown above, perform the following steps also:

1. Press alt key to move to the design tab of the ribbon and then use tab key to move to the lower part of the ribbon. 2. Use tab key until you reach the "page numbers" choice and press enter key. 3. Use tab key until you get to the "format page numbers" choice and press enter key. 4. Use tab key until you get to the group of radio buttons where JAWS will say "continue from previous section."
5. Use down arrow to choose the "start from" choice.
6. Focus should move to a spin box but if it doesn't then use tab key to the spin box.
7. Use down arrow and choose "0" as the starting number.
8. Use tab key to OK and press enter key.

PAGE NUMBERS IN HEADERS STARTING AFTER PAGE TWO

1. Move the cursor to the top of page three or to the page where you want to start using headers. 2. Press Alt followed by P followed by B and then use down arrow and press enter on the "continuous break" choice. This will create a new section starting on the same page. This is slightly different from earlier versions of Word as section breaks are treated a little differently in Word 2007. 3. The cursor should be at the beginning of section 2 and at the top of the page where you want numbering and headers to start.
4. Press Alt followed by N followed by H for inserting a header.
5. Choose the "blank header" choice and press enter key.
6. Press CTRL+R to start the right alignment.
7. Type in the last name and then if you want the words "page number" on the next line press enter key and type those words. 8. Leave a space after typing the words "page number" and then press Alt key to go to the design tab. Press tab to move to the lower part of the ribbon.
9. Use tab key to the "page number" button and use spacebar.
10. Use up arrow key to move to "current position" and then use right arrow into the submenu for current position. 11. Press enter key on the choice for using plain numbers without formatting. 12. Press Alt key to move to the design tab and then use tab key to move to the lower part of the ribbon. 13. Use tab key until you find a button that says "link to previous" and if it is checked then press enter key on that button to remove the checkmark. It is a good idea to press Alt again and tab to the button to make sure it is no longer chosen. 14. Move back to the design tab of the ribbon by using Alt key, tab to the lower part of the ribbon, and then tab to the choice for using a different first page. It does not need to be checked so use spacebar on it if it is checked. 15. Press Alt key to move to the design tab of the ribbon and then tab key to move to the lower part of the ribbon.
16. Use tab key to the "page numbers" choice and press enter key.
17. Use tab key to the "format page numbers" choice and press enter key.
18. Use tab key to the group of two radio buttons and instead of choosing "continue from previous section" be sure that the "start at" radio button is chosen. 19. In the spin box choose the number 1 if it is not already chosen and tab to the OK button and press spacebar. 20. You should now be able to either press escape to return to the document or go back on the design tab and choose close button from the lower part of the ribbon.

If you find that the header is not starting on a page after page two then try selecting and deleting the text in the header showing for page one and two and make sure that the "link to previous" is not checked. This can be tricky at times but hopefully it will work for you.

You can still use a keystroke of Alt+V followed by H to bring up the headers and footers window.

Let me know if you have any trouble with any of the above steps and I'll try to help if I can. My Email address is shown below.

Take care.
