I mainly use Outlook 2003 on my home desktop and have never used windows Live Mail. The great thing about thunderbird though is that you can get a version which can work portably off a USB pen. I therefore use the portable version of thunderbird to check my mail whilst away from my main PC. Using thunderbird in this way is far easier than using a webmail email page . However given the choice between thunderbird and Outlook I would still plump for Outlook as my main email client as navigation around the program seems more instinctive and easier. This may just be a question of being more familiar with Outlook though.
I realise that Outlook is not a free option but if you have any version of office you will have access to Outlook.
