Hi Brian,

Will these dictionaries also work for MSWord 2003? If so, may I also have these dictionaries?

Thanks in advance.

In friendship,

Hi Kimsan,

There are a couple quite good medical dictionaries and spell checkers that are free. I have uploaded a zip file to Sendspace for you to download if you want to. The dictionaries are probably not as complete as a Stedman's or Dorland's Medical Dictionary, but they do contain several thousands of words and they are free. Two files in the compressed zip file are executable files and will install the Free Medical Dictionary and the Free Medical Spell Checker as programs on your system. The other two files are word lists that can be added as dictionaries to Microsoft Word. They have a DIC extension.

I know that you are using Vista and Word 2007 so the instructions I will give are for those programs. However, they are not really too much different for earlier versions of the Word program. Here is how to add the dictionaries to be used for spell checking in Word 2007:

1. When you unzip the file that you download from Sendspace you will find two files with the DIC extension. Select them both and copy them to the clipboard. 2. Press Windows key and then find your user name in the start menu and press enter key. In your case you can just press K until you hear Kimsan and then press enter key.
3. Press A for App Data and press enter key.
4. Press the letter R until you hear "roaming" and press enter key.
5. Press M until you get the "Microsoft" choice and press enter key.
6. Press U until you get to the "UProof" folder and press enter key.
7. Paste the two .DIC files in that folder.
8. Close the window by using Alt+F4.
9. Open Word 2007.
10. Press Alt+F to depress the office button and then press I for Word options. 11. In the categories list arrow down a couple of times to the "proofing" category. 12. Tab to the "suggest from main dictionary only" checkbox and make sure it is not checked. If it is checked then remove the checkmark by pressing spacebar.
13. Tab again to the "custom dictionaries" button and press spacebar.
14. Tab to the "add" button and press spacebar.
15. Tab to the list of files that are in the UProof folder, use down arrow to move to the all-Unicode.DIC file and then tab to the open button and press spacebar. Don't do that on the custom.DIC file as it is already being use by Word. 16. Repeat the steps taken in 14 and 15 above but choose mth-medspellcheck.DIC file to open. 17. Use shift+tab until you get to the "dictionary list" and use arrow keys to confirm that the "all-Unicode.DIC" and the mth-medspellcheck.DIC files are included in the list.
18. Tab to the OK button and press enter key.
19. Tab to the OK button again and press spacebar.

Now if you type the word "hepatosplenomegaly" without the quotes into Word, it will not be recognized as a misspelling.

Here is the link on Sendspace for the zip file:

Take care.

Hi,
Who could tell me how I can add medical dictionaries and other spell checkers into word? Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first. - Mark Twain
