Subject: [JAWS-Users] questions about live mail
I noticed when I tried to use live mail with jaws 11, several things are
different.
1. It didn't announce the status of the message (example unread).
2. It didn't announce the status of a conversation (collapsed or
expanded).
Answer for 1 and 2: You need to have graphics read all turned on (Use insert
V to get there)
Then the appropriate graphics need to be labeled. This is easier with
sighted help but I did figure out the unread, attachment, and expanded
graphics and labeled them. Then I changed my graphics setting back to
graphics labeled.
3. Autocomplete is turned on for addresses. When filling in the to field
on a new message, it didn't announce the address or name of the contact.
In outlook express, it does this.
Answer: Actually, when you tab and then shift tab it will read the expanded
addresses. But it does not use the names to expand. It will expand the email
address if you start to type the beginning letters of the email address but
this is not really convenient since I don't have all the addresses
memorized. What does work pretty well is to give each contact a nickname
that is distinctive. I use first names or things like sister, grandson,
husband, etc. Then you can type the nicknames followed by a comma and the
addresses will fill in automatically. But you still have to tab and shift
tab to get back and hear them.
4. When trying to get to the message body when creating a new message,
Jaws jumps in and out of forms mode. It then starts reading what looks
like a web page. If you try to navigate around the page, the system
sometimes goes haywire and you get ding-ding-ding-ding.
Answer: I don't get this problem. When replying to a message I do have to
press the left mouse key to put focus in the edit field for the reply. But
the regular editing functions work at that point. I do have document
presentation set to simple layout if that might make a difference. I also
have screen track virtual cursor on but I don't know if that makes any
difference.
5. First letter navigation doesn't appear to be working in the folder
list.
You can probably guess what the question is. How do you fix it or is it
something that can be fixed? Thanks for any information you can provide.
I'm using windows xp sp3.
Answer: I have not found any first letter navigation in the folder list. The
home and end keys do take you to the top and bottom of the list which is
handy. I also have the folders grouped into subfolders For example each
current mailing list has it's own folder included in a folder called a new
mail folder. This way the folders that need checking regularly are all at
the top of the list. Then I have folders for saving emails in such
categories as Letters to save, Food-Health related, For future reference,
etc. These have other folders inside so that when arrowing up and down the
folder list I can close the main folders and not have to arrow through each
sub folder.
Now my question is "Since you have Xp that means you have access to Outlook
Express. Why would you want to use Windows Live Mail if you don't have TO?
