sure you can just open it where it is and if it ask if you want to save
changes to your document tab to no and it will be just where you had it
before

If I want to open up a pdf document just too see if it can be read, can I
do that without saving it?and if it can read it successfully, can I reopen
it later and then save it if I want too with out any serious consequences
without having any effect on the document?
