Thanks, Brian, I thought you meant that but I wasn't sure about the right option. Anyway, if it helps, I am using Jaws 10 and Power Point 2007.
Thanks a lot,
  Mariela

Hi Mariela,

I was referring to the option in JAWS verbosity. If you use JAWS key with V
to bring up the verbosity dialog, press the letter "P" until you hear
"picture and graphical object detection." If it is not turned on then use
spacebar to turn on the detection function. Press enter key to save
changes. (I am not sure if you are a new JAWS user, but the insert key on
the number pad on the right side of the keyboard is the JAWS key. If using
a laptop configuration then the caps lock key is the JAWS key). If the
picture and graphical objects detection is turned on then when you move on
to the picture using an arrow key JAWS should speak the size of the picture.

While working in Microsoft Word you can also move directly to a picture by
listing objects using CTRL+Shift+O. The command gives a list of objects.
Use up and down arrow keys to find the object or picture you want to work
with and press enter key. When you press enter key the cursor should be
right where you want it to be to get the correct context menu. Press
application key. I thought that the Alt text tab was in the format picture
dialog but it is in the size dialog. After using application key use up or
down arrow keys to the "size" choice and press enter. Use CTRL+tab in that
dialog to move to the Alt text page. If need be use tab to the edit box.
There might already be text in the box that you might want to leave, but if
not or if you want different text just replace the existing text. Tab to
the close button and use spacebar after typing in the text.

Take care.

Dear Brian, many thanks! I still have a doubt about something you've
mentioned.

You wrote:

your arrow key to move on to the picture. Make sure in verbosity that JAWS
is set to speak picture information."

What is the option in Jaws that sets the program to read picture
information?
Thanks a lot,
   Mariela

Hi Mariela,

Some of what you want to know depends on the version of PowerPoint and JAWS
that you are using. The main keys to use with JAWS in PowerPoint 2003 and
PowerPoint 2007 are f6 to move pane to pane. The f6 key will move you from
slide view to the slide thumbnail view, notes view, etc. You can use tab
and shift+tab within one of those views to move between the controls within
the view. You can use enter key to move from an object level to an editing
level, and escape key to move back to the object level. You can use
CTRL+pageUp or CTRL+PageDown keys to move slide to slide. You can use up or
down arrow keys in the notes area if you press enter to move into the
editing level. In PowerPoint 2007, the F6 key will also bring you into the
ribbon area and the status bar.

When including pictures you can add alt text to the pictures. In Word use
your arrow key to move on to the picture. Make sure in verbosity that JAWS
is set to speak picture information. When you move the cursor on to the
picture then select the picture. Using shift+right arrow key will often do
the selection. Use application key and find the format picture menu choice.
Press enter key on the choice. Use CTRL+tab to move to the alt text page
where you can add the alt text description.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Power Point presentation?

Hello, people, my name is Mariela and I am from Argentina. In my job I've

been asked to create a Power Point presentation from some Microsoft Word

documents and inserting some image (.jpg) files, and I'd like to know the

way how Jaws works with that. I know, of course, that Jaws wouldn't read

images, and I have some help from a sighted person when I need it; what I

want to know is basically what I can do with Jaws, how far I can get using

Power Point with Jaws and which are the basic commands.

Many thanks in advance,

   Mariela
