I have experienced the same behavior in Outlook 2007 and in text docs. For reasons I cannot understand. I can be either typing or reading and, suddenly, everything goes silent. I have learned to wait it out and it stops. I was guessing that there was something happening with the program or with some aspect of program or virus scanning that I could not know was happening because it was visual.
