I have read that it isn't that uncommon to have a virus attached to the software on a CD, sometimes even when you buy it from reputable manufacturers. There are always hackers trying to infect the servers/programs of software companies with malware. It's probably not a bad idea to have an antivirus program scan a CD or DVD before installing software from it.
