Hello Josh,

You will likely be able to keep track of cursor position better when working
in print view. When using Alt+delete key in print view, JAWS will tell you
the distance of the cursor from the left edge of the printed page and the
distance from the top of the printed page in inches. When using the tab
key, you will be told the horizontal position of the cursor in inches.

Use Alt+CTRL+N to go into normal view. Alt+CTRL+P puts Word in print view.
Alt+CTRL+O puts Word 2007 in outline view. In Word 2007, normal view is
called "draft view." However, if you happen to have NVDA installed, the key
combination Alt+CTRL+N starts NVDA. You can change that in NVDA or in Word.
You might consider adding the "customize keyboard" command to the quick
access toolbar in Word 2007. You can then use that command to change
conflicting keystrokes. For example, if you want to keep ALT+CTRL+N to
start NVDA then you could apply the changing to normal view keystroke to
Alt+CTRL+Shift+N. It is best to leave the default keystroke but the
following steps can be used if you want to use that given keystroke for a
different purpose.

Here is how you can add the "Customize keyboard" command to the quick access
toolbar:

1. Press alt+F to bring up the Office button menu.

2. Press the letter "I" to get the Word options dialog box.

3. Press the end key and then use up arrow key about three times to the
"customize" category.

4. Tab to the "choose commands from" dialog box and press the letter "A"
until you get to the "all commands" choice.

5. Tab to the list of all commands and wait a couple seconds for the list
to populate.

6. Press the letter "C" until you get to the "Customize keyboard" item.
It will actually be faster to press "D" and then use up arrow a few times.
Do not select the "customize keyboard shortcut" command, but be sure to pick
the "Customize keyboard" command with an ellipsis following its name. JAWS
will say "customize keyboard dot dot dot."

7. Tab to the add button and press spacebar.

8. Tab to the "customize quick access toolbar" combo box and make sure
that the choice is for applying to all documents. If another choice is
active such as the current document only then use up or down arrow keys
until the "for all documents" item is selected.

9. Use tab key until you get to the "Quick access toolbar" list box of
current items and use up and down arrow keys. The "customize keyboard" item
should be listed. Its position in the list will determine the number to be
used with the Alt key when accessing the icon from the quick access toolbar.
If it is at the top of the list then you will activate it every time you use
Alt+1. You can move it up or down in the list by using your arrow keys in
the list box to move to the item and then tabbing to the "move up" or "move
down" buttons. If it is at the top of the list then there will just be a
"move down" button available. If it is at the bottom of the list then there
will only be a "move up" button available. Make note of its position in the
list so you can quickly move to it when you need to.

10. Tab to the OK button and use spacebar or enter key to exit out-of-the
dialog.

11. After doing the above steps, you should be able to use Alt with the
number applying to the "customize keyboard" choice on the quick access
toolbar to bring up the dialog box when you need to.

Let us say that you want to use Alt+CTRL+Shift+N for the key combination
that changes to normal view. Here are the steps you could follow:

1. If you remember the number to use for the customize keyboard item then
press Alt with the number to launch the dialog box. Otherwise, press Alt
key and then use shift+tab until you get to the choice. This could be
slightly different in JAWS 12.

2. In the resulting list of categories press the letter A until you get to
the "all commands" choice.

3. Tab to the list of all commands, and you might need to wait a couple
seconds for the list to show all of its items.

4. Press the letter "v" to move to the area of the list with the choice you
need. Use down arrow key until you get to the "view normal" choice. If you
type the letters v I e w quickly you will move right to the first choice
starting with the word view.

5. When you find the "view normal" choice use tab key to the "press new
shortcut key" edit box and press the key combination you want. For example,
pressing Alt+CTRL+Shift+N will designate that keystroke for the "view
normal" choice.

6. Tab to the "save changes in" box and make sure it is set to something
like normal.DOTM.

7. Tab to the "assign" button and use spacebar.

8. If you now tab one time from the entire list of commands, you will find
the list for current keystrokes. The new one will be in the list and any
old keystrokes will also still be in the list. You can select the keystroke
you want to remove and tab to the remove button to remove it.

9. Tab to the "close" button and use spacebar to close the dialog box.

The example above was for changing the keystroke applying to changing the
view in Word 2007 to "normal", but the procedure can be followed and used
for any other listed commands in Word 2007.

JAWS might not speak the change to you when you switch to the normal view,
but after using the keystroke if you read a title bar with JAWS key T, JAWS
will let you know the view you are working in after reading the document
title.

Take care.
