Kate, unless I am interpreting your query incorrectly, you do the following

Insert+N, tab once and you should be located on the attach file button.

Click once, pressing the space bar, and you will be presented with the File
dialog. Navigate to the file you want to attach and press enter to complete
the attachment.

I'm using outlook at work.
We upgraded our system to word 2010 so sending attachments changed since I'm
now dealing with ribbons.
