So you are two updates behind. It is not new features or bug fixes it seems you need. Downloading and installing the update will set all of the key mappings to their default.

Just in case you are curious, here is how to check the key mappings and how to fix them.

1. Open Word.

2. Press JAWS (Insert for desktop layout; CapsLock for laptop layout) + F2, to bring up the "Run JAWS Manager" dialog. Hit the letter k to select the "Keyboard Manager", and hit the Enter key.

3. This will place you in the Keyboard Manager on the Microsoft Word application. Press Tab to go the list of key bindings for that application. It is a list of scripts available for that application and the key combination, if any, that invokes it.

4. Press Control + F, then hit the combination you are looking for, in this case F8. Hit the Enter key to start the search.

5. In Word the F8 key should be mapped to the SelectionByUnitMode script. If it is mapped to something else, you probably want to press the Delete key. This does not delete the script, just this key combination to invoke it. Now move down the alphabetical list to the SelectionByUnitMode script. It may not show any key combination or it may be reassigned to something else. If the new assignment is not desired, press the Delete key. Press Control + a to Assign a new key combination. It will ask for the new combination, hit F8 and then the Enter key.

6. Now press Control + Shift + d to show the scripts in the default script file. These are the scripts available at the desktop and for all applications. Again press Control + f, then F8, and hit the Enter key. It should respond "No key found". If it is mapped to a script, it probably should be deleted.

Hey Don,
I pressed f8 while I was in my email, and it brought up the jaws menu, so I tested it on line, and it said selected, and that is the only place it did that.
I haven't updated to 12.1169 I think that is the latest
I'm still running 12.525.

That's very strange! So pressing F8 brings up the JAWS menu within
Word? Does this happen everywhere or just Word? This should only happen when pressing JAWS + j. I would have you check out a few things in Keyboard Manager, but just installing the new update should fix this key map as well.

Have you tried Quick Keys mode in Word? It works much like Quick Navigation in Internet Explorer. Quick Keys is enabled and disabled by using JAWS + z as a toggle. When in Quick Keys mode, you will not be able to edit the document. It merely lets you navigate the document with single keys. Like in IE, h will move to the next heading, p will move to the next paragraph, and so on. If the chapters start with a heading, such as heading level 2, just pressing 2 will move to the next chapter.

For example, this could be used with the F8 selection as follows:

1. Move to the beginning of the text to be selected. Then press F8.

2. Turn on Quick Keys with JAWS (Insert) + z.

3. Press the 2 key to move to the next chapter. It will read the entire amount selected, which annoys me, so I rarely use F8 for selection. If I am confident about the selection, I just continue on the next step.

4. Copy the selection using Control + c.

5. Return to normal by pressing Escape to exit the selection mode and then JAWS + z to exit Quick Keys mode.

I hope this is more like what you are looking for.

I know how all the basic select commands work. I am asking for something different, which I think has been provided. I want to know quite specifically how to highlight a PORTION OF TEXT in a document that is not a line, word, or paragraph so that cannot; select with the normal commands. (Let's assume the section is in the middle of the document, so select-to-end and select-to-beginning are not efficient ways of ding this.) Does that make things clearer?

Can you use the control a to select all?

This actually was not what I am asking. Let us say I need to
copy a chapter from a textbook that is several pages long. How
can I do this, other than going paragraph by paragraph and
appending? I know sighted people can do this, and I can do it
quite easily with a notetaker.

Hi Kelby,

Try the information below to see if this will do what you are
wanting to
accomplish.

The F8 key in Word is a Toggle. You press the F8 key a different
number of
times to select different amounts of text.
Pressing the F8 key 1 time turns extended selection mode on. In
this mode
you can arrow up or down to select text line by line.
Pressing the F8 key 2 times will copy the highlighted word.
Pressing the F8 key 3 times will copy the sentence the cursor is
in.
Pressing the F8 key 4 times will copy the paragraph the cursor is
in.
Pressing the F8 key 5 times will copy the document.

Hope this has helped. Take care.
Mike

Brief question from a first-timer. Is there a way to block
text--as in multiple paragraphs--for selection in a document
with
JAWS? Like highlighting a certain section of thedocument that
is
not just a line, word or paragraph for copying and/or cutting?
