I use miranda IM for most of my text chatting. There are jaws scripts for miranda available from the blingeek website that will work with the current version of miranda I think.

I forget who was asking, but Googletalk (also know as g-chat in some
circles) is another instant messaging program. It's been replacing MSN in
terms of popularity and is the go-to program of choice for those who use
Gmail addresses, though anyone else can obviously sign up too.

You can configure any jabba client to connect to Googletalk for text chat as
Googgletalk uses the jabba protocol and servers for text chat.
