you can also get a keyboard monitor switch and share the monitor and - if desired - a keyboard between both computers.

Whehter or not a computer boots without monitor depends on the computer and the setup. Have someone sighted go into the cmos (bios) and check if the computer can be set to boot without screen attached. This is often a bios setting - but not always.
