I am telling you this story so that if the same problem occurs again,
perhaps someone who has had the same experience, can suggest a solution. I
have a win7 computer, jaws 13, and IE9. Right now. Jaws is talking
beautifully. However, on Friday morning, when I turned on my computer, after
Jaws said that it was ready, it stopped talking. Using my hot keys, alt
control J, didn't work. They just brought me to the jaws menus. I could tell
because I use extremely highly magnified magic as a supplement to jaws. So
after rebooting a few times with the same thing occuring, I called Freedom
Scientific. The tech person Eric, who is a real hero, managed remotely, with
just his braille display and my minimal vision and magic, to get jaws to
talk again. But it was hard going and it took a long time. He said he'd sent
my original jaws settings to the recycling bin. So then, because I'm so
inept, he helped me redo the settings. On Saturday morning, when I turned
the computer on, Jaws didn't talk at all. But I could use alt control J to
start it. I went into the menus to be sure that it was set to start
automatically when the computer is turned on. This morning, I turned on my
computer, jaws began to talk, and once again, just as on Friday, it stopped
talking. I tried rebooting and it didn't help. I was lucky that the sighted
person who helps me with the computer came over later in the day. But here's
the thing. When I turned on the computer, it did the same thing as earlier.
He sat down, picked up the mouse, and jaws began talking. I asked what he
did and he said he didn't do anything. He just went into the menus to look
and it started talking. Now, he came over in the middle of a Sunday and it's
at least a half hour drive one way, and he didn't charge me so he had no
ulterior motive for not telling me what he did or what I should do if it
happens again. He really didn't know, or couldn't explain it. So I'm
wondering if anyone has had this happen to them and what you've done. Jaws
was running, just stopped talking. I have just found this email in which
David gives key strokes for unmuting jaws and maybe that would work, except
I never muted it. It just stopped talking all by itself after saying, jaws
is ready. I would have not been able to use the computer had my computer guy
not been so kind and accomodating and available. I might have waited for
days. And for all I know, this could happen again tomorrow morning although
we did turn it off and on again before he left today.
