Windows 7 Master Keystrokes Listing
Windows Keys
General Windows Keys and Desktop Keys
• ALT + F4: Closes an active application.
• ALT + TAB: Cycles through open applications.
• ARROW Keys: Moves through the options on the Desktop and Start Menu,
Taskbar or System Tray.
• CTRL + END: Moves to the bottom of the document.
• CTRL + HOME: Moves to the top of the document.
• DELETE: Deletes the item in focus.
• END: Moves focus to the beginning of the line.
• ENTER: Used to open the item associated with a Desktop icon, Start Menu
option, Taskbar Button or System Tray icon. Or when focus is on an item on a
list of search results, opens the file and its corresponding application.
• ESC: Closes any sub menus or jump lists on the Start Menu and returns
the Start Menu to its default appearance with focus in the Search Edit Box
or closes the Start Menu’s search results and brings focus back to the
Search Edit Box. Closes any menu.
• F3: Moves focus to the Search Edit Box when in Windows Explorer.
• HOME: Moves focus to the end of the line.
• LEFT and RIGHT ARROW: Moves through the buttons on the Taskbar and
icons on the System Tray. On the Start Menu will move between the right and
left sides of the Start Menu, cycling between the two sides. This will be
true except in the case of jump lists. In the case of jump lists, will open
and close a jump list on the Start Menu.
• TAB: Moves between the components of the Windows Desktop. SHIFT + TAB
will reverse direction. On the Start Menu, will move to the top of the right
side of the menu, to the Shut Down Button, to the top of the left side of
the menu, to the last item on the left side of the menu, to the Search Edit
Box.
• UP and DOWN ARROW Keys: Moves through the options on the Start Menu.
• WINDOWS + #: Activates a Taskbar Button, with the # representing the
numeric position from the Start Button.
• WINDOWS + ALT + #: Opens a Taskbar Jump List, with the # representing
the numeric position from the Start Button.
• WINDOWS + B: Moves focus to the System Tray buttons.
• WINDOWS + D: Minimizes all applications and brings focus to the
Desktop.
• WINDOWS + T: Moves focus to the first button on the Taskbar
• WINDOWS: Opens/Closes the Start Menu.
Dialog Box Keystrokes
• ARROW Keys: Move between check boxes and radio buttons, change choices
in a combo box, moves slider value or change value in spin box. The ARROW
Keys can also be used to move back through and read text in an edit box.
• END: Moves focus to end of list.
• ESC: Closes a dialog box without saving the information. Equivalent to
activating the Cancel Button.
• HOME: Moves focus to beginning of list.
• SHIFT + TAB: Moves backwards through the controls in a dialog box.
• SPACEBAR: Selects a radio button, activates a command button, or
select or deselect a check box choice.
• TAB: Moves forward through the controls in a dialog box.
Context Menu Keys
• SHIFT + F10: Open the Context Menu.
• The following keys will also open the Context Menu: APPLICATION Key,
RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON, and ASTERISK Key on the Numpad with Num Lock turned off.
Windows Keystrokes in use for Windows Explorer
• ALT + F4: Closes Windows Explorer.
• ALT + LEFT ARROW (or BACKSPACE): Activates the Back Command.
• ALT + RIGHT ARROW: Activates the Forward Command.
• ALT + UP ARROW: Moves up a level in the File List.
• ALT + V, then A: Opens the Arrange Sub Menu.
• ALT + V, then O: Opens the Sort By Sub Menu.
• ALT + V, then P: Opens the Group By Sub Menu.
• ALT + V: Opens the View Menu.
• ARROW Keys: Moves through items on a sub menu.
• BACKSPACE: Moves back to the Control Panel from a Windows Explorer
Window opened by an applet.
• CTRL + SHIFT + N: Creates a new folder.
• CTRL + W: Closes Windows Explorer.
• DOWN and UP ARROW Keys: Moves through the items on the File List.
• END: Moves to the last item in the Navigation Pane.
• ENTER: Opens a folder in the File List.
• F6: Used to move forwards between the different sections of the
Windows Explorer Window.
• HOME: Moves to the first item in the Navigation Pane.
• LEFT ARROW: Opens a closed item on the Navigation Pane Tree View.
• PAGE DOWN: Moves down through the File List displaying search results.
• PAGE UP: Moves up through the File List displaying search results.
• RIGHT and LEFT ARROW Keys: Moves through the items on the Toolbar.
• RIGHT ARROW: Closes an open item on the Navigation Pane Tree View.
• SHIFT + F6. Used to move backwards between the different sections of
the Windows Explorer Window.
• WINDOWS + E: Opens the Computer Folder using Windows Explorer.
• WINDOWS + F: Opens Windows Explorer and moves focus to the Search Edit
Box. The search will be conducted over the entire computer by default.

• ALT + F4: Closes Windows Help and Support.
• F1: Opens Windows Help and Support.
• F6: Toggles between sections in the help system.
• TAB (SHIFT + TAB): Moves between links in the Topic Pane.

• MODIFIER + B: To get an overview of the dialog box.
• MODIFIER + TAB: Announces the control in focus.
• SHIFT + Numpad 5: Says single letter hot key.
Help related JAWS Keys
• ALT + B: Move back a topic page.
• ALT + X: Move forward a topic page.
• ALT + F4: Closes a help system screen.
• ESC: Closes the Virtual Viewer.
• F6: Toggles between sections in a help system.
• MODIFIER + 1: Turns on Keyboard Help. Next press will turn off
Keyboard Help. The 1 is from the number row not the Numpad.
• MODIFIER + F1: Opens the Virtual Viewer for Screen Sensitive Help.
• MODIFIER + H: Lists the JAWS hot keys that will work on the current
screen.
• MODIFIER + J, then F1: Opens JAWS Help.
• MODIFIER + W: Lists the Windows hot keys that will work on the current
