Depending on the file format, you could read .epub and .pdf ebooks with version 1.8.1 of the free adobe digital preview program, although it's not bug free and the pdf books crash jaws easily, if one tries to navigate.
Note that you'd have to authorise the program with the relevant book ID, if protected, otherwise it won't open. Version 13 of Kurzweil 1000, just released, can also read epub files, provided that it is not drm protected. All Amazon's purchases are drm protected, but they don't sell .epub or .pdf format ebooks in any case, only kindle, with .prc, .mobi, or .azw extensions. They can be converted to txt, provided that they are no longer drm protected, by either the zamzar.com, or convertfiles mobi to txt, sites.
