Alt H, N will take you to the numbering area where you can select 'none'.
This will turn the automatic numbering off for you.
If you want to stop the numbering all together, than following these
instructions:
Alt F, T arrow down to Proofing
Alt A
Tab to 'AutoFormat As you Type'.
Tab down to 'Automatic Bulleted Lists' and/or 'Automatic Numbered Lists'
These will have a tick in the fields - if you remove them - you will no
longer have the automatic numbers or bullets coming up.
