When you first install the drive, there may be a dialogue asking if you want to install software, schedule backups, etc. but you can back out of it and use the drive just the way you would use any other drive. Windows will assign it a drive letter, and you will see it in the list of drives in Windows Explorer or My Computer, or just Computer if you are using Windows 7.

Normally they are empty and in most cases I have seen if there would be any software already on the drive for you to install on your system it won't be accessible. I just got a call from a guy who told me that: http://www.buy.com has a 2 TB Phantom USB 3.0 drive for $90. I did check and it is absolutely true. I have a Phantoms for a few years already only it is a 1 TB drive. When I plug it in to the USB drive, will it start backing up my computer itself? Or can I choose what gets put on it like using a flash drive? Do I need or want to back up programs, or in my case I just want to back up mainly music and books and documents? thanks again for all your answers. I have not bought one yet, I am looking on Amazon right now for the best one. Does anyone have a good model or brand that you might suggest besides seagate which I am thinking of buying?
