Well, there are several things that are NOT happening: There is no smoke
smell; there is no burning sensation in any undesirable places; and there is
no sound letting me know that I am getting incoming messages. So, I guess
two out of three isn't too bad, right?

Hi Jerry,
Checking that box in Tools / Options won't give you a sound for new email
unless a sound is assigned to the new mail notification sound event in
Sounds & Audio Devices / Sounds tab. I can't give you any help on how to
get to where you need to go to make these changes in Vista but, hopefully
someone will reply with steps on how to add or change sound events in
regards to your operating system.
