Hi Kevin, Which is better, is highly debatable, since the user has no real way of accurately telling, past what the program reports. I use the Windows defrag utility on multiple machines running both XP and Windows 7, and have not had any troubles with it. If you keep the hard drive maintained on a regular basis,you shouldn't have any problems. No need to install software that isn't really needed, which is one way of keeping your computer clean.
