Mute.exe will work but only on XP.

A complex system that does not work is invariably found to have evolved from
a simpler system that worked perfectly.

while this may hnot help at the moment, wasn't there a program that would
un mute speekers at start up? Is your friend using a keybord that has extra
buttons above the top row? If so try pressing the buttons around the volume
keys on the keybord.

Hit them 1 at a time, and see if it un mutes there sound.
good luck.

if your friend is using JAWS14, i think layered keystroke insert space bar +
S for muting and unmuting JAWS will work. on the other hand, i personally
mute and un mute windows system sound right with in my speaker's mixer. i
dont know any keystroke for doing the task. i my self do it manually.
