Unfortunately Essentials has developed a bad reputation as Microsoft seem to
be letting it wither on the vine. It might be fine for an emergency
fal-back but I wouldn't use it as my main protection. Walter.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws & Avast, incompatible?

Hi Folks. A few years ago I had my PC reformatted and Avast was installed
as my anti-virus. This caused quite a number of problems with Jaws not
performing properly and my computer not functioning as it should. Avast was
removed and AVG was installed and things then worked fine. I subsequently
bought a new computer and as AVG wasn't as good as it once was; it became
increasingly less accessible I thought with newer versions of Jaws that
perhaps Avast would be fine now. Well this has not proved to be the case of
late. With Jaws 14 and Jaws 15 every now and then I would lose speech and
could not re-launch it, at times I had to restart the PC. This would happen
at random times without a pattern and it became irritating. When my speech
failed I couldn't even launch NVDA to inquire of what might be the problem.
This would happen when backing out of folders or when going back to a
previous web page. I used to use the backspace for this command but this
problem occurred much too often. I then started to use the alt/left arrow
to back out of folders and move backwards on web pages and that helped to a
limited degree as it happened less often, but it still happened too
frequently. Avast has now been uninstalled and my PC is working like a
dream, so fast reacting and I can work at speed with confidence that the
computer and Jaws will keep up and not have a seizure. I have come to the
conclusion that Avast and Jaws are not really on good terms. I can't speak
for other screen readers but I know there is a problem with Jaws and Avast.
At this moment I have no anti-virus but I'm going to install Spybot as they
now also have an anti-virus version but you must pay for that. Has anyone
else had a similar problem with Avast? Walter.
