You can get an identity theft service if you want. But, there is probably more risk if you give your credit card to a waitress or give the number to someone over the phone. Online shopping means no human has any interaction with that number.

Some things to be cautious about:

Make sure the page is secure with an https in the address.

Never click on a unknown link in an email message and don't give out information unless you specifically browsed to the appropriate site.

Don't do your shopping on a open wifi network that doesn't have an access password, nor on any public wifi network such as those provided in coffee shops, hotels, etc.

Keep your PC browser and anti-virus definitions updated.

I did have credit card info compromised at an on-line gift club site, but my Credit Card provider's Fraud Department contacted me. You have I think sixty days to nofity them if you notice any fraudulent charges on your card. If you contest a charge, you don't have to pay until they make a determination.
