Hello Anna,
The following information applies when the regular Word 2013 ribbon is being
used and not when the JAWS virtual ribbon is active.
The first time you use the "define" item in Word 2013 you will need to
download and install an app to be used for definitions. Move the cursor
onto a word in a document and press the application key followed by D. You
will activate the "define" menu item and focus will be back in the document.
If focus doesn't move directly into the pane where you choose a dictionary
or reference to use then you will need to press F6 until you get to that
pane. As you tab in this pane you will find Wikipedia, an English
dictionary and the Bing dictionary. Each item has three links followed by a
download button. For example, when you tab to the Wikipedia link you can
use that link to go to Wikipedia. However, if you continue tabbing in the
pane you will find links for terms of condition and privacy, and if you tab
again you find the download button. Each of the references have the same
links specific to the app they provide and the download button. Just press
spacebar on the download button for the app you want to use for definitions.
When the app has been installed you should save your document if necessary
and close Word. When you open Microsoft Word again and use the define menu
item the reference for definitions you chose should be the one used.
Remember that you use function key 6 to move from the document pane to the
pane that shows definitions. After using F6 use tab key to move to where
the definition is given. You should then have a virtual cursor and be able
to use your up and down arrow keys to read the definitions. In this pane
the CTRL with spacebar does not give a menu with a choice to close the pane.
However, with JAWS 15 the pane doesn't seem to interfere with the main
document pane at all. You can just use F6 to move between the panes. When
you pick a subsequent word to define and use the define menu item the pane
that gives definitions automatically refreshes to define the current word
you want defined.
I didn't personally care for the Wikipedia or English dictionary items but I
found that the Bing dictionary gave me more precise definitions.
When you install a reference to get definitions in Word 2013 there is an
additional group of icons added to the insert tab of the ribbon. (At least,
I don't remember them being there prior to installing what I installed).
There is quite an involved process to change your definition source or going
back to using none of them. If you ever want to uninstall or change the app
being used you will need to perform a number of steps.
1. Press Alt+N to move to the insert tab.
2. Tab to the lower part of the ribbon.
3. Use CTRL+right arrow key until you find the Apps group box and
press spacebar.
4. Tab to "My apps" and press spacebar.
5. Press spacebar on the "See all" item.
6. Arrow down a few times in the resulting window and press enter on
"Manage my apps."
7. In the resulting window press T to move to the table of apps. Use
Alt+CTRL+end key to move to the bottom choice in the table, which is "hide
apps", and press enter on that link.
8. Use Alt+F4 to close the window.
9. Make sure focus is back in the document pane. If it isn't then use
F6 until that pane is in focus.
10. Go back to My Apps in the Apps group of the insert tab and press
spacebar.
11. Follow the above steps starting with step 5 until you get into the
window that has the table where you chose to hide apps. However, don't use
the "hide apps" choice as mentioned in step 7 above. Instead of going to
the "Hide apps" link find the "Refresh" link and press enter key on it.
12. You can then close the window and close Word 2013.
13. When you open Word again and use the "Define" feature the pane should
then be back to showing three apps to choose from and the one you hid should
not show in the pane. If you want it again you can use the "More apps"
choice in that window and choose it again from the window that appears. You
can also choose to download another app to use by using the download button
for the given app.
I hope this works for you.
Take care.
Brian Lee

Subject: [JAWS-Users] word 2013
Hi all,
I know I sent this just a few minutes ago but I did not check the wording
before I sent it, so I am going to send it again.
How would I go about using the define feature in word?
thanks in advance
