Hi Charles, I recently helped update some Windows 8.1 computers from friends on these lists. The update installs just like any other Windows Update. You will have to be fully updated before you are presented with the option of installing the windows 8.1 update.
The latest update will not do anything to remove the Start screen for the older Windows7 start menu. Regarding booting to the desktop, this was possible in Windows 8.1 though one had to configure this feature manually while I believe the new update will do it automatically. Again, it is perfectly safe to install the update, and Jaws will speak all the way through. I believe the update is some 300 megs in size, and when it installs you will be asked to reboot. After restarting your computer please give it about 5 minutes for it to install the update. In other words, if you don't immediately hear Jaws talking, please give the update time to install itself and jaws will eventually begin speaking. You will also want to complete this download as soon as possible as I believe Microsoft is requesting Windows 8.1 users complete the update before the end of May 2013.
