from what I recall, Windows Defender was originally an antispyware program
that was developed for at least Windows Vista and 7. when Windows 8 came
out, Security Essentials wasn't compatible for Windows 8, so Microsoft made
a modified version that was named Windows Defender, which is built into
Windows 8, It can't be uninstalled, there is no downloadable executable.
Just let it update when it wants to. If you want to install a third party
antivirus program, the vendor might have instructions to disable Defender or
the antivirus you install will probably auto disable Defender.

Hi,
You can navigate to it from the search box edit (Windows key) and activate
it from the Defender's menu and run it,
But on this end that did not happen for some reason.
I am running AVG pro and should have nothing to do with windows defender?
Can someone explain why my Windows Defender is not working in Wind 7.

Thanks,
Jorge

I had thought that Defender was a firewall only; while MSE was a full
package. I had also thought that MSE was using Defender as part of its
complete protection. Thanks for responding- glad to learn a bit more.

My Windows7 PC shows that MSE is on but Defender is off- is this normal?
?Does the MSE software contain Defender by default- so that it really is on?
Thanks much.
