from what I recall, Windows Defender was originally an antispyware program that was developed for at least Windows Vista and 7. when Windows 8 came out, Security Essentials wasn't compatible for Windows 8, so Microsoft made a modified version that was named Windows Defender, which is built into Windows 8, It can't be uninstalled, there is no downloadable executable. Just let it update when it wants to. If you want to install a third party antivirus program, the vendor might have instructions to disable Defender or the antivirus you install will probably auto disable Defender. hth
