Lynn,
I am afraid that there are no great shortcuts to make Windows 8.1 easier to
navigate. What you can do is set it up to boot directly to the desktop like
the older versions of Windows did. Here are the steps for doing this:
-Open Control Panel either bvia the start screen or by pressing the Windows
logo key and pressing the letter X to open the Power Users menu, then
scrolling down to Control panel and press enter.
-In Control Panel, find either Appearance and Personalization, or Taskbar
and Navigation. The one that you find will depend on how you have Control
Panel configured.
-If you find Appearance and Personalization, open it and click on Taskbar
and Navigation,
- If you find Taskbar and Navigation, click on that, and then on the
Navigation tab inside of this.
- Now, check the box that says "When I log in or close all open apps, go to
the desktop instead of the start screen.
- Next, tab down and press enter on the OK button. From now on, when you
sign in to Windows or close all open apps, the desktop will appear instead
of the start screen.
Another thing that you can do is to install an app that puts the start menue
back into Windows. Some examples of this are: Classic Shell
(www.classicshell.com), Start is Back (www.startisback.com) , or Start 8 (,
from (www.stardock.com).
I hope these tips help you out, but it would be good if you still tried to
get used to the Windows 8.1 interface, because things are probably not going
to return to where they were before.
Best,
Mike

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Windows 8.1
I just bought a laptop using Windows 8.1 and have J5(1) I have lookeda
website and cant find anything as to any special settings that might
make the OS easier to navigate.
Also, in related matters, how do you read messages in Outlook which I
assume is part of Office 365?
Thanks very much.
