Hi

In JAWS 14 and 15, there is a feature called Convenient OCR which may help
with some scanned documents. It does optical character recognition on the
current screen or window. You invoke it by pressing and releasing
JAWSkey+spacebar. Then press o for Convenient OCR. Next press s if you
want the current screen processed or w if you want the entire current window
processed. When it's finished processing, it will say JAWS. You then can
arrow around with the JAWS cursor, which is active, to read what it was able
to process. Pressing any other key besides the arrow keys will take you out
of Convenient OCR mode.

The results from Convenient OCR are not as good as those from OpenBook. I
said it may help because how good the OCR turns out varies depending on the
window or screen you're trying to read. I've seen it process a Window in 20
to 30 seconds. I've seen it take a long time to finish and some instances
where it never did finish before I got tired of waiting for it. For some
screens, the results are pretty readable. On others you may only get enough
of the document to determine what is its jist. And on others, there may be
nothing readable. Hopefully FS will be able to improve this feature in
future releases.

Mike, Janet and all, I will keep this link Mike for future reference to see
if it would work. Not all of us have scanners, and not everyone has Open
Book. I have never been ab le to read a scanned document and have
specifically asked people when it was possible to send me a word document.
But in Janet's case, she needs to do this now, not when she gets a program
that will do it for her. It is truly maddening and I encounter this all the
time at work, when human resources or someone sends me scanned things. I ask
for word documents, but they don't comply. If there any hope for the future
for Jaws to be able to handle these kinds of things? Thanks. Judy & Tallie
