7-zip is a good compression tool. In addition to standard zip
compression, they have their own .7z format which gives even higher file
compression. It is also pretty easy to use. The only problem is that,
if you want to send a file in .7z format to someone else, they have to
have 7-zip also to decompress it.
Since it is free, you may want to download it and experiment to see if
it will help.
