Hello Hick,
The Control R keystroke works for me whether the message is opened or
closed. As long as I am focused on a message, I can use this short cut to
respond to an email. Sorry, but I do not know what your problem could be.

JAWS then seems to go in to forms mode and when I try to type a reply, it is
