On Windows 8.1, I press the Windows key + enter to begin narrator. After this, I turn off JAWS by pressing insert + F4. When I do this, I hear Narrator loud and clear. However, I also unload JAWS first and then start narrator. Sometimes, this seems to work better. Make sure that you alt tab to the Narrator window, because there are changes you can make to the voice rate and so on. If you keep tabbing through the dialog in the Narrator window, there is an exit button that you can press the space bar on to close it Narrator. If you turn Narrator on first, make sure you tab to the Narrator window right away. Jaws will be talking much louder than Narrator at this time, so you may not be able to hear the voice of narrator. When you are in the narrator window, JAWS will be telling you the Narrator choices instead of the voice of Narrator. You will know by being in this Narrator window, though, that Narrator is open Even if the JAWS voice is talking m uch louder. Now, press W
