I never seen this problem before, no insert key. I also have a
problem, I have no keypad. Don't get why.

Don't you just love how creative those laptop designers are?

Thanks to everyone for all the ideas and suggestions. As it
turns out
there is indeed an insert key on the keyboard of the new laptop
but
it's in a different place and only half the size of the "normal"
keys.

I had someone sighted look at the keyboard and he found the
insert key
tucked away above the f12 key. Who would have guessed? Certainly
not
me. I feel a little foolish, but at least I have my insert key
back
without the need for any fancy keyboard gymnastics.

Thanks again to all who contributed to this discussion.

 Mike,

You may have missed the original point, which is that the new
laptop they
purchased does not have an insert key.

 Hi

If you're using the desktop keyboard layout, which is the
default, insert
 is
the JAWSKey. If you change to the laptop keyboard, CAPS lock is
then the
 JAWSKey.

key

 Hi

Well, I have to correct my previous email. While insert+h and
insert+j do
perform those functions and CAPS lock+h and CAPS lock+j do other
 functions,
I just found that there are actually Laptop keys to do those
functions.
 They are control+shift+CAPS lock+h and control+shift+CAPS
lock+j. I
 prefer
the insert key. This is just a guess, but there is ;probably an
insert
 key
on that laptop, but you have to hold down the function key to
use it.
Hopefully the Laptop documentation will reveal some information.

Mike, then I'm also mystified. If there is indeed a need for an
Insert
 key,
and none is on that keyboard, then how are those keystrokes to
be
 performed?

 Hi

When you're using the Laptop keyboard layout, the CAPS Lock key
is the
JAWSKey, but not the insert key. I do not believe it will put
you in or
take you out of insert mode while typing. You can perform most
of the
 JAWS
functions using the CAPS lock key, but not all of them. While
using the
Laptop keyboard layout, there are a couple of functions that
still require
the actual insert key. You have to use insert+h to bring up
Hot key
 help.
Also you have to use insert+j to move to the JAWS window or
bring up the
JAWS context menu if you're running JAWS from the system tray.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but if I'm using the caps
lock as
 my
jaws key (which I am), how does it also function as the insert
key?

That''s right. If you set JAWS to the laptop keyboard layout,

does function as the JaAWS and Insert keys. Great.

Sounds to me like it may be time for a wireless keyboard with
all of
the keys on it. That's what I use and its great. I have one
from
 Logitech and one from hp.

There's no dedicated numpad on this keyboard either. <g

 Hi Kimber,

The number pad key 0, which you know as the JAWS key when the
Num
Lock is turned off, also serves as the insert key. Therefore,
the
JAWS and the Insert key are one in the same.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] No insert key on my new laptop keyboard

 Hey All,

I just got a new laptop and there is no insert key on the
keyboard.
It has been replaced by a double-sized delete key.

I use the caps lock for my jaws key so that's not the problem.
But is
there some key combination I can utilize to invoke insert mode?

And who the heck thought this new keyboard design was a good
idea?
Why do I need a double sized delete key anyway? Sheesh!

All suggestions welcome. I'm stuck with this laptop for reasons
I
won't go into. Nor is an external keyboard the solution I would
 choose. Any other ideas?

 Thanks in advance.
