There wasn't anything called 'Preferences' on my standard Google page, but
the things you described were revealed under a 'Settings Button'. The weird
thing was though, that I could not check the button to turn off Google
Instant with either the keyboard or mouse simulation. I've done the 'click
here to turn off Google Instant' a million times, but it always came back up
the next time I opened the page- so am clueless as to what the inability to
select that radio button could signify.

Search

1. Open preferences from the Google page.

You will be on the search settings tab. The list will look kind of like
this:

Search Settings

Search results
Languages
Location
Help

SafeSearch filters
SafeSearch
can help you block inappropriate or explicit images from your Google Search
results. The SafeSearch filter isn't 100% accurate, but it helps you avoid
most violent and adult content.
Turn on SafeSearch.
Turn on SafeSearch.
Lock SafeSearch

Google Instant predictions
When should we show you
results as you type?
Only when my computer is fast enough.
Always show Instant results.
Never show Instant results.

Results per page
50

Where results open
Open each selected result in a new browser window.
Open each selected result in a new browser window.

Search history
When signed in, you can receive more relevant results and recommendations
based on your search activity. You can turn off or edit your search history
at any time.
Save
Cancel

2. Below the search settings you will see other tabs that you don't want
right now: i.e. Search results, Languages, Location, Help.

3. The first thing is Safe Filter results which you can check if you don't
want explicit or violent sites.

4. The next thing is instant predictions. Here, to turn them off, you want
the third radio button.

5. If you want to change the results per pade, you can do so with the
slider. It is a bit challenging to adjust with a screen reader, but it can
be managed.

Finally, when you have things set up the way you want, click the Save
button.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Hmmm... I kept looking for a place to permanently disable Google Instant so
I wouldn't have to do it every time- where are you finding this option?

I haven't experienced the issues others are having with Google either. I
went into there search options and disabled the instant results as you type.

If you need an alternative, try

I tried it and it worked well for me. Considering making it my default. Will
try a few comparisons with Goobble before switching. Tom

I got so many 404 errors with StartPage that I went back to Google!

You are not the only one experiencing this issue. Google users on other
lists have also reported this error. Apparently, Google is no longer
supporting the accessible search site, so you may want to consider
adifferent search enginelike startpage.com:
