I need to know how to save the new version to my desktop and how to create a hot key for it. If you install Jaws 16 on your computer, it will automatically create a desktop icon for you. Freedom Scientific assumes that you will want to use the new software right away. Can I leave the old version of JAWS on the desktop? Yes, you can. They will be marked Jaws 13 and Jaws 16. Also will my computer start up each time with the new version of JAWS? It will if you set it up that way. After installing Jaws 16, presss INSERT+J to reach the Jaws window. You will be presented with a menu. If you press ALT+O you'll be taken to the Options menu. The first choice in that menu is Basics. The title is followed by three dots. That means that you have to press Enter to open the menu. Within that menu, is a submenu called Automatically Start Jaws. Activate it by pressin your spacebar. The first option is to start Jaws automatically. That is a check box and you press the spacebar to check it. There are other options as well. If you are the only one who uses Jaws on your computer, choose Start Jaws for All Users. Some of these settings are already chosen. Jaws 13 will still be on your system but 16 will now start automatically. Jaws takes up quite a bit of space on your hard drive, Kate. But I certainly do understand that you might want to return to Jaws 13 until you are completely familiar with version 16. Are there any major changes from JAWS 13 TO 16? Yes there are. The best way to learn about the new features and capabilities would be to read the What's New In Jaws 16 choice in your Help menu. Jaws 16 comes with a full set of instruction books, also available in the Help menu. Some of them are Daisy books which will speak automatically. To access the Jaws Help menu in version 16, Press INSERT+J to reach the Jaws window. Press alt+h to access the Help menu and use your up and down arrows to choose the topic you'd like to hear. If you press Enter while focused on one of those options, the reader will start automatically. If you are unfamiliar with a Daisy player, it works like Windows Media Player. You can stop the reading by pressing CONTROL+p. That command also starts the reading again. To shut down and close the reader, press CONTROL+S. If you need more help with the reader, there's a complete manual describing how to use it in the Help menu. I know it took a little time to do and I am sure many people like myself have learned some new tricks and other ways of doing things by reading this. So keep up the good work by doing this because I always learn something new by reading your instructions even though I have done these things. I thought when she would install jaws 16 it would create a new icon on the desktop so I am not sure why she would have to create one after installing it. Am I not thinking right here? No matter which Windows version you are running, you can open Computer, This PC, or File Explorer, whatever it is called on your computer, and then open your C drive. Arrow down to Program Files, and press enter to open this. Now, arrow down or press the letter F to get you to Freedom Scientific, and press enter to open, then find JAWS. Open the JAWS folder, and then open the 16.0 folder. In the 16.0 folder, press the letter J, or you can press JFW one after the other, to take you to a file called JFw.ENU. Now, down arrow down one time to the file simply called JFW, if you arrow left, this file should be identified as an Application under the file type heading. Next, press the applications key on your keyboard to open the context menu, and arrow up or down to find the "Send To" item, and press enter on this. Arrow down one, two, or three times, depending on your computer, to find the item called "Desktop (create shortcut), and press enter on this. Lastly, close out of Computer by pressing Alt + F4. Now, go back to your desktop, and press the letter J until you find the JAWS 16.0 - shortcut. You can press F2 to rename this shortcut as you like. If you have a Startt menu on your computer, you can open this by pressing the Windows logo key, and arrowing down to the Freedom Scientific folder, open this, and find the JAWS 16.0 item. Once again, while focused on this, open the context menu and then Send To, and then Desktop (create shortcut) as another way of putting the icon on your desktop. Now, to create a hot key to open JAWS with, focus on the icon for JAWS 16 on the desktop, and press the applications key to open the context menu. Arrow up one time, and press enter on the properties item. You will open onto the shortcut tab, so tab down until you hear "Shortcut key:hot key, and it should say "None". Now, just type in the hot key that you want to use to open JAWS with, usually Alt + Control + J, then tab down to the apply button, then back around to the OK button to close out of the process. Now, you can try closing JAWS, and reopening it with your hot key. Yes, you can leave the old version on your desktop, but after you become familiar with JAWS 16, I would recommend that you uninstall the JAWS 13 from your computer. To set JAWS to start up automatically at start up, at the JAWS window, press the Alt + H key stroke, which will open the help menu. Now, arrow up or down to find the Start Up Wizard and press enter to open this. on the first screen of this wizard, tab down through the items and make your selections to set up JAWS as you like it. then press enter on the Next button at the bottom. On the second screen is where you will make the selections to have JAWS o2pen at start up. At the very top of this second screen, you will need to tab down through the selections to configure JAWS to start up as you want it to. the first item is to check the check box that tells JAWS to start up at the log on screen, thereby giving you speech during log in. Next is the setting for all users. If you want JAWS to start up after log on for all users, then check this box. If some sighted people use your computer, then you may want to leave this unchecked. Lastly, comes the setting for you, or "This User". This is a combo box, and you will want to set it to always so that when you sign in to the computer, JAWS knows to restart after you have signed in. Now, simply tab down down through the remaining items pressing enter on the Next buttons until you find the Finish button at the end of the wizard. Be sure to read all of the items as you do this and make any changes that you want, to make JAWS behave as you like. There are some changes between JAWS 13 and 16, and I am probably not the best person to tell you what they are, as I tend to forget what changed from one version to the other. But many improvements have been made over the last few versions. One thing that 16.0 introduced is the OCR function, which when invoked, will allow JAWS to read the text within a graphic for you. I do not use this feature very much, and honestly would have to go back and read how to start this process again. I suggest that you repost your last question again to give someone else the opportunity to help you with this one. I hope that I have been of some help to you however, and do not hesitate to post back if you do not understand anything. Press the application key, up arrow one time to Properties, press enter. Tab two times to shortcut key, press the letter J, if that is the letter you want to use for your shortcut. Tab to OK, press enter, confirm if needed with the Spacebar. Now, when you press Control+ALT+j, your Jaws 16 program will come on. While, installing Jaws 16, you will have several choices. For example, run Jaws from the system tray, by default, this is unchecked. I would check this item, here are the reasons: 1. At any time you can press, Insert+J, to bring up the Jaws window. 2. When pressing ALT+Tab, the Jaws window is out of the way. When you are installing Jaws 16, You will come to a dialog page, Start Jaws on the log-on screen, make sure that this is checked. This way Jaws, will be available when putting in your password to log-in. So, When you are on your desktop, pressing the letter J, will take you to your older version {13} of Jaws Icon. Pressing J, again will take you to your newer version {16} of Jaws Icon. That way, you can choose the one that feels the best to you. For me, I went to Wal-Mart and purchased the cheapest keyboard that they offered. It is a standard 104 key USB keyboard and it works great with every computer and laptop that I have used it with. It is about three years old now and still going strong. I believe that it cost $12. Ed -----Original Message----- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Mike Sent: Thursday, September 24, 2015 12:39 AM To: Jaws List Group Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Upgrading to JAWS 16 Hi Kate, There are two ways that you can add JAWS 16 to your desktop: Not knowing what version of Windows you are running, this may vary a little, but should be close, depending on if you have a start menu or not, as in Windows 8 or 8.1. Microsoft offers the 5000 Series Bluetooth keyboard. However, according to a friend of mine who is fairly tech savvy, it's not as ergonomic as the 4000 series (which is USB only.) I don't know if ergonomics makes a real diference, in many respects it would just be great to find a keyboard where the keys are a bit larger than a laptop keyboard and there is some elevation diferential between the keyboard rows. Bluetooth offers some convenience. Any recommendations. If you are interested then read on as I explain. Now I have configured many a signature line in my day and I know how to set things so that all new messages along with replies and forwards always get the appropriate signature attached. Having said that in this case my signature lines only show up on new messages and that?s all. I always use a specified file for my signature lines so that if I ever decide to change my signature for any reason it is much easier since all I have to do is edit the file rather than going to tools, options, and flipping past 5 or 6 tabs to get where I want to go and fiddle with all of that stuff. The thing was I am accustomed to my signatures being placed just after any text I write in a message, no matter if it is a new message or either a reply or forward. In live mail this is not so any longer because I finally noticed that the signature was being placed in a reply or forward at the bottom of the message and not just after my most recent part of it. This is Outlook 2007 on windows 7 and as you might notice the signature is where I thought it should be in live mail. So it was doing what I wanted it to do, just not the way I expected it, oh BTW no trees were killed while composing this message but a great many electrons were inconvenienced. FYI I?ve done this in outlook express, outlook 2000, 2003, 2007 and if there was any other program in my past I am drawing a blank as to what it was at this moment. The point is it?s not rocket science, it just won?t work right. David Ferrin You don't have to be crazy to run a list like this, but it does help. I've been shift tabbing in file explore and always selecting this pc. Good grief that drove me nuts, then after all that frustration of doing that. I noticed I didn't have to do all that. Why you ask? Because after I log in this pc appears already, but I never paid attention to that because when I log in, at times I'm not looking at the screen, one time I did and saw a white screen and thought nothing of it, not knowing it's the this pc window lol. Someone give this man a raise. -------- Original Message ---------- From: "jim" To: Cc: Sent: Fri, 25 Sep 2015 11:45:06 -0400 Subject: [JAWS-Users] Using Windows key+E, to open your This PC in w-10 I want to thank Adam, for reminding me, of this Folder Option change in w-10.
