Hi Dennis,
Here are my tips for customizing a w-10 computer with Jaws.
You will want to switch your default Edge browser to IE, instructions included in this email.
I hope they help you.
Customizing w-10 with Jaws.
After reinstalling Jaws 16 or 17, I would check the following areas on the windows 10 computer.
First of all, I would check my default programs.
windows key+I, Open settings.
You are in a horizontal list of 9 items, use your right and left arrow keys to move across the items.
enter on system, arrow down to default apps and press enter.
Tab across this window, look for the browser which by default is Microsoft edge. Press the spacebar on the edge, tab to IE, press the spacebar, this will set IE as your default browser. Do the same thing with the different defaults programs, for example email clients. Tab to email default, press the spacebar on it, tab to the email client you wish to use, and press spacebar, to set as default.
Changing your Folder Options:
The “Old folder Options” is now called, File Explorer Options.
So for an easier way of finding it, do the following.
1. Press enter on the Start button.
2. Start typing, folder,
3. Press down and up arrow, look for File Explorer Options, Control Panel, press enter.
4. By default, the first item is set to Quick Access.
Down arrow one time to change it to, This PC.
5. Press Control+Tab, go to, reset Folder Options press the Spacebar, Confirm again with the Spacebar, this will apply changes to all folders.
6. Tab to the OK button and press enter.
7. Now, when you Press Windows key+e, this keystroke will open your, This PC, instead of Quick access. Here is how you Turn off all of the background apps you will not be using, all are on by default.
windows key+I, go to privacy and press enter.
Go down to back ground apps and press enter.
Tab across and uncheck most of these apps.
Each time you uncheck one of them it will kick you back to the home button, just tab back to the next app in the list, make your choice to leave it on or turn it off. The next thing you want to do is go to the Windows update and change the following.
Press Windows key+I, go to update and security and press enter.
Tab to advanced options and press enter.
Tab four times too, choose how your updates are delivered and press enter.
Make sure when you tab that this sharing feature called, Let other computers send me updates is turned off, and let my computer send updates to other computers is also turned off.
this will effect your computers speed and performance, especially in IE.
Microsoft leaves all these back ground things on by default.
Next area you want to check is your live tiles region.
Press enter on the start button, down arrow to your apps, right and left, up and down arrow around in them.
Press the application key on each app, you will have different choices.
For example:
After you highlight a certain live tile app you want to turn off.
press the application key, go down to Turn off live tile, press enter, this will turn it off. After turning the live tiles off, press the application key again on that app, go to Unpin from start, press enter to unpin from start.
this will remove the app from the start list region.
You can also resize them, press the application key on the highlighted app, go down to the resize sub menu, press the right arrow key. You can choose from, small, medium, and large which is wide, press the enter key on your choice.
Next, if you want to uninstall an unwanted app on your computer.
Press enter on the start button.
Up arrow to , All Apps, press enter.
Down arrow through the list of apps, if you find one you wish to uninstall.
Press the applications key, down arrow to uninstall and press enter, press the spacebar to confirm. Many of these apps are built into the w-10 system, you will not be able to uninstall them. Next, You want to turn this setting off, unless you want your computer sending a lot of information to Microsoft.
Press Windows key+I, open settings.
Go to Privacy, press enter.
go down to Speech, inking, and typing, press enter.
Make sure that it says, getting to know me, and not stop getting to know me.
If it says, stop getting to know me, just press the spacebar to change it back to getting to know me.
all these things combined will slow down your computer.
Hi, here is another tip to organize what you see when tabbing across from your desktop. From your Desktop, Tab to the Notification Chevron button, do not press enter.
Press the application key.
Go down to, Hide the Task View, press enter.
Any time you want to open the Task View just press, Windows key+Tab.
This will take the Task view out of the way, when you are tabbing across your computer from the desktop. There are other things in this list which you can turn off, by pressing enter on them, such as the extra search area. For example: When tabbing from left to right from my desktop, this is What I hear: Start button, Taskbar, Notification Chevron button, Show desktop button, back to my desktop. I have removed the other two default items from tabbing across, the Task view and the extra search. This makes for a cleaner experience, when tabbing to the desktop and taskbar and notification Chevron button on our w-10 computers.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Windows 10

I just recently purchased a new PCand it had Windows 8 on it with a
free upgrade to Windows 10. In Windows 8 I was not able to navigate
to the power buttons: Shutdown, restart, sleep; and was unable to get
to any of my aps so I upgraded to Windows 10, and although I'm able to
navigate a bit I seem unable to navigate in Edge. I try using the
Jaws cursor but that doesn't give me any information at all, I just
get "blank". Is Edge accessable to Jas 16? Are there special
keystrokes to nabigate within Microsoft Edge?

A Ballast for My Soul

Life is like a stormy sea
That tosses to and fro,
But God's Word will ever be
A ballast for my soul.

By its truth I'll be held fast
Till I reach heaven's shore
Where I will be home at last
And sail life's sea no more!
