I do not think you can tell if an email is the real thing or not.
because when I get an email like you have stated below the way I deal
with it is if I did not send an email to that specific person or company
I do not reply to it or for that matter open it..
so I guess I would have to say trust your own instincts on deciding
whether or not an email is the real thing
from the replies I just got on this subject.
how can you tell if an email with poor spelling is the real thing, my
mom says it can happen to anyone when typing vigorously.. I got a
message from a
person who claimed to be from Microtech help
and he spelled that microtech hepl
now he did say my computer had viruses an offered some programs to
purchase to clean up my system. I immediately dismissed the message
because I have
vipre lifetime security. he also stated my vipre was just a trial
version. really!

You can enable the preview pane for your messages, this will give you a
look
at the first few lines of the email. And, no, a virus does not say "I am a
Virus", but a suspicious email does have certain traits depending on the
sender. I received a message stating that it was from PayPal a couple of
days ago, which told me that my profile for the site was incomplete, and
that I needed to click on a link to update it. I knew right away that this
was not true, and the grammar and spelling in the email was atrocious,
definitely not from a company like PayPal, so I deleted the message. Upon
speaking to a PayPal representative about it, I now know that I could have
forwarded this message to PayPal, and they would have investigated who sent
the message to me. Typically, someone who does this sort of thing, sends
out
an entire batch of the messages at once, and PayPal or other companies
start
to get lots of calls about them.

On my Thunderbird email client holding down the control U brings up the
message source and pressing the letter n takes me to the next message.

control u only takes you to the next unread message.
even if you look at the source of the message you need to have some
background in programing in order to find something suspicious
a virus will not say this is a virus!

I always thought that if I did a control U and looked at the message
source was the way to do it. but I am not sure.
