howdy Mike, I think the gear icon is the equivalent to pressing the alt
key to get a menu bar, but obviously it's a visual thing and pressing
the alt key does nothing, because I remember when I was fiddling with a
toolbar, the instructions started with "click on the gear icon". I think
there is no way for blind users to activate this gear icon because it is
probably not labeled properly. short of getting a sighted person to
click it for you, the rest should be similar to working with menus,
buttons,, combo boxes, and the other familiar elements. this does not
necessarily mean that you won't encounter any other graphical icons that
perform functions along the way. you could try pressing alt+g,
control+shift+g or variations there of to activate that gear icon.
btw, the gear was most likely chosen for the icon because it represents
the workings of the program you want to control/manipulate, meaning
adjusting it's options/settings.
