Kevin, I don't know of any free scanning software. The closest I can come would be the KNFB Reader. It is an app which works on your cell phone. However, it costs about $90 normally. That's a lot less than Open Book for sure. I believe that there are versions wich work for Android as well. It uses the camera in your phone to photograph the document and then the software reads it for you.
