First, thank you for posting the steps you took to find a tentative solution. Very helpful. I'm not sure I can be equally helpful. By turning off NVDA's speech, you haven't unloaded it, and so it's still running in the background. It makes sense in light of what you want to accomplish, which is to move swiftly between speech programs. However, it appears they conflict even when NVDA speech is off. Still, I wonder if closing and reopening Word might be a workaround. Maybe JAWS would somehow reset itself. Even less likely, I wonder if maximizing the window with alt-space, then x, might help.
